Destination Zero Bridge Strikes: How Operators Can Lead the Way

Bridge Strikes continue to cause major disruption across the UK road network - and the reality is, they are all preventable. That’s why the Destination Zero Bridge Strikes campaign exists: to involve Transport Operators in actively reducing risk and committing to a culture of prevention.

The campaign officially launches at Road Transport Expo on 25th June, and there are clear, simple steps Operators can take now to get involved and lead the way.

What is Destination Zero Bridge Strikes?

Destination Zero Bridge Strikes is a practical, industry-led initiative focused on one goal: zero bridge strikes - through training, communication, and shared responsibility. It’s not just about awareness. It’s about real change - helping Operators build a stronger safety culture where expectations are clear, conversations are open, and drivers are supported with regular, meaningful training.

What Operators Receive from Road Skills Online

✔️ Policy Statement – A clear declaration of intent you can adopt internally - setting the tone that Bridge Strike prevention is a business-wide priority
✔️ Free Toolbox Talk for Drivers – A short 15-20 minute e-learning module covering the key causes and consequences of Bridge Strikes with solutions to prevent the risk. It is designed to refresh awareness and encourage safer decisions. Every driver receives a certificate of completion
✔️ Awareness Poster – A visual prompt to display on your noticeboard to help keep the message front of mind
✔️ Champion & Ambassador Certificates – Recognising organisations and individuals committed to prevention. Vehicle Operators can be named as a Destination Zero Champion

What It Means to Be a Destination Zero Champion

To become a Destination Zero Champion, Operators must commit to four practical actions:

  1. Adopt the Policy Statement (available post-launch)

  2. Provide annual Bridge Strike training to all drivers (the e-learning free Toolbox Talk is available from Road Skills Online)

  3. Display the awareness poster on your noticeboard and rotate

  4. Follow a full post-collision procedure if a Bridge Strike occurs - not just submitting insurance forms, but investigating the root cause to help prevent future incidents

Post-collision procedure documents are available separately from Road Skills.

This approach is about learning, not blame - and creating a culture where Bridge Strike prevention becomes part of how the business operates every day.

Why It Matters

We’ve all heard the worrying comments: “I’ve done it before and nothing happened.” Or, “I thought I could just get through”. This mindset doesn’t change without clear expectations, regular training, and visible leadership. Destination Zero Bridge Strikes gives Operators the opportunity to drive that change - starting with the free Road Skills Online Toolbox Talk and ending with a more confident, better-informed team behind the wheel.
